European alternatives for bot protection: CAPTCHAs and bot management

By Ludwig Thoma

A practical map of EU options beyond reCAPTCHA and hCaptcha — Friendly Captcha, TrustCaptcha, CAPTCHA.eu, ALTCHA, and Atmosvere — plus why a CAPTCHA alone is not bot management.

European teams do not have to default to Google reCAPTCHA or US bot platforms. There is a real EU stack for privacy-first challenges — Friendly Captcha, TrustCaptcha, CAPTCHA.eu, ALTCHA, and Atmosvere’s own CAPTCHA alternative — and a smaller set of European bot-management options when you need classification beyond a form widget.

One clarification up front: hCaptcha is not European. It is widely used as a reCAPTCHA alternative and markets privacy-conscious features, but it is operated by Intuition Machines, Inc. (US). If your procurement asks for an EU company and EU-controlled processing, put hCaptcha in the “US privacy CAPTCHA” bucket — not the European-alternatives shortlist.

Two layers people mix up

LayerJobTypical EU examples
CAPTCHA / challengeRaise the cost of scripted form abuse; verify a client on a page or actionFriendly Captcha, TrustCaptcha, CAPTCHA.eu, ALTCHA, Atmosvere CAPTCHA Alternative
Bot managementClassify automation across websites, apps, and APIs; allow / challenge / block by route; report good vs bad trafficAtmosvere (Bot Shield); other specialists with varying EU postures (e.g. DataDome)

A challenge widget is useful. It is not a bot program. We unpack that gap in why reCAPTCHA is not enough. Jurisdiction still matters for both layers — see digital sovereignty for EU platforms.

European CAPTCHA and challenge alternatives

These vendors are commonly shortlisted when EU teams want to leave Google reCAPTCHA (and often hCaptcha) for privacy, accessibility, and EU corporate control. Always verify current HQ, DPA, and where verification traffic is processed on your plan.

Friendly Captcha (Germany)

Friendly Captcha is a German provider known for invisible proof-of-work challenges: users typically do not solve image puzzles. Positioning is privacy-first, GDPR-oriented, and accessibility-aware. For EU buyers, check whether dedicated EU-only processing is default on your plan or a higher tier — plan details change, so treat residency as a procurement checkbox, not a slogan.

TrustCaptcha (Germany)

TrustCaptcha (Trustcaptcha GmbH, Munich) is another German, EU-hosted CAPTCHA alternative. It combines proof-of-work with risk scoring and configurable security rules, and markets EU-only processing as a product default. Useful shortlist peer when you want challenge + risk signals without US puzzle networks.

CAPTCHA.eu (Austria)

CAPTCHA.eu is an Austrian managed CAPTCHA / bot-protection widget service: invisible or light-touch verification, hosted in Austria, GDPR-focused, no classic image puzzles. A natural peer for Austrian and DACH teams that want a managed EU processor with a clear residency story.

ALTCHA (Europe / open source)

ALTCHA is a privacy-first, proof-of-work CAPTCHA alternative that can be self-hosted (no third-party verification calls) or used as a managed offering. Self-hosting is the strongest “no external processor” option for some DPOs; you then own ops, uptime, and tuning. Made-in-Europe positioning; confirm legal entity and cloud options for your RFP.

Atmosvere CAPTCHA Alternative (Austria)

Atmosvere’s CAPTCHA Alternative is built as a privacy-first challenge layer (frictionless / code / adaptive modes) on the same European company story as our bot management: Austrian company, made and hosted in the EU on European-owned infrastructure. It is designed to sit inside a broader allow / challenge / block policy — not as the only control you buy.

Others worth a look

The EU CAPTCHA map is active. You may also see names such as CaptchaFox (Germany) on European-alternatives directories. Treat them like any vendor: HQ, hosting, DPA, accessibility claims, and whether they are a widget or a full bot platform.

European bot management (beyond the widget)

When scrapers, account abuse, APIs, crawlers, and invalid marketing traffic matter, you need classification and policy, not only a form challenge (IP lists, WAF, and CDN bot toggles are often not enough).

Atmosvere is built as the European alternative for bot management: sole EU headquarters in Austria, made and hosted in the EU on European-owned infrastructure, EU-only residency by design. Use it to classify good vs bad automation, protect sensitive routes, and optionally challenge with a privacy-aware mode.

Other specialists exist with different EU stories. DataDome was founded in France and remains a serious bot vendor — with a global headquarters footprint (including the US). That can be fine for some RFPs; it is not the same as a sole-EU operator. See Atmosvere vs DataDome. US-centric platforms (HUMAN, many CDN bot suites, Google/hCaptcha stacks) dominate market share but are not “European alternatives” in the sovereignty sense (Atmosvere vs HUMAN, vs Cloudflare).

How to choose without boiling the ocean

  1. Decide the job. Form spam only → EU CAPTCHA shortlist. Scrapers, logins, APIs, ads → bot management first; CAPTCHA as a mode.
  2. Ask the jurisdiction questions. Sole (or primary) HQ? Who owns the infrastructure? What leaves the EU on your plan?
  3. Do not equate “privacy CAPTCHA” with “EU company.” hCaptcha can be privacy-aware and still US-controlled.
  4. Prefer layered defense. CDN/WAF + European bot management + optional EU challenge — same “extension” idea as Bunny / Cloudflare pairings.
  5. Keep challenges rare and adaptive. Friction is a cost; solvers and AI weaken puzzle-only strategies (AI and detection).

Bottom line

European alternatives are real — especially for CAPTCHA: Friendly Captcha, TrustCaptcha, CAPTCHA.eu, ALTCHA, and Atmosvere’s challenge layer. hCaptcha is not one of them by company home. For platforms that need more than a widget, pair an EU challenge with European bot management such as Atmosvere Bot Shield — so privacy, residency, and automation policy live in one coherent stack.

Common questions

Is hCaptcha a European company?
No. hCaptcha is a product of Intuition Machines, Inc., a US company. It is often chosen as a privacy-friendlier alternative to Google reCAPTCHA, but it is not an EU-headquartered provider.
Is Friendly Captcha the same as European bot management?
No. Friendly Captcha (Germany) is a strong EU CAPTCHA / challenge layer. Full bot management classifies automation across sites, apps, and APIs, applies route policy, and reports good vs bad traffic — with CAPTCHA as one optional challenge mode.
